As artificial intelligence becomes more capable, one assumption keeps resurfacing.

That the human becomes less important.

My experience has been exactly the opposite.

The more capable the AI, the more valuable the Operator becomes.

Not because the Operator has all the answers.

Because the Operator remains the author.

There is an important difference between generating ideas and giving them direction.

AI can propose.

It can analyze.

It can challenge assumptions.

It can even improve a line of reasoning.

But it cannot decide what matters.

It cannot determine which tradeoffs are acceptable.

It cannot own the outcome.

That responsibility still belongs to the human.

I've begun noticing something interesting in collaborative work with AI.

The goal is no longer finding the best answer.

The goal is developing the best understanding.

Sometimes that understanding emerges from one conversation.

Sometimes it emerges from many.

Sometimes it grows because multiple intelligences challenge one another until something clearer appears.

In those moments, the Operator's role isn't diminished.

It becomes more important.

Someone must recognize the signal within the noise.

Someone must decide what belongs.

Someone must preserve continuity.

Someone must be accountable for the final work.

That is authorship.

As AI becomes more capable, I don't believe the human disappears.

I believe the human's contribution changes.

The future may belong to those who can thoughtfully guide intelligence rather than simply compete with it.

Perhaps that's what it means to be an Operator.

Not the one with every answer.

The one responsible for what ultimately becomes true.

Only the Operator can decide whether it belongs in the story.
